Walton powers Findlay

Cooper Service Findlay
Kelly Walton wasn't Findlay High's starting third baseman Tuesday. She just played like she was.

Walton, who played third in Monday's win over Tiffin Columbian, moved to the pitching circle for Tuesday's non-league softball game with Maumee. The junior right-hander was just as effective there, inducing Maumee into 17 ground ball outs and handling nine of those chances herself as the Trojans topped the Panthers 5-2.

Walton struck out two and didn't walk a batter as Findlay improved to 2-0 heading into Thursday's showdown at Elmwood. The game was the season opener for Maumee.

Maggie Gilliland had three hits for the second straight game to lead Findlay offensively. Walton added two hits, Nicole Lahey and Katie Crow both doubled and Carrie Lammers had a clutch 2-run single.

Crow doubled in the first inning and came around to score when Gilliland's single to right was bobbled. Findlay broke through for 3 runs in the fourth after loading the bases on consecutive base hits by Gilliland, Walton and Katie Miller. One run scored when Maumee let an infield pop up fall, and after Emily Warnimont walked to reload the bases, Lammers came through with her 2-run single.

Findlay added an insurance run in the sixth when Shelby Treece delivered a pinch-hit single, stole second, took third on a sacrifice bunt by Lammers and scored on an error.

Sasha Matyi ripped 2 doubles and Tabatha Britt homered for Maumee.

In other softball action:

— Ada opened its season with a dramatic 13-12 non-conference win an eight- inning over Ridgemont.

Ada's Tia Douce led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a bloop single. Ashleigh Hays' sacrifice bunt moved Douce to second. With two outs, Tasha Hefner singled home Douce with the game-winning run.
