Girls Basketball: OHSAA ousts Regina from girls tourney
COLUMBUS -- South Euclid Regina, one of the most dominant girls basketball teams in Ohio, has been disqualified by the Ohio High School Athletic Association for using an ineligible player.

No. 2-ranked Regina (21-3), a six-time state champion, was scheduled to meet Smithville on Saturday in a Division III regional final. Elyria Catholic, which lost to Regina 68-45 on Wednesday night, will take its place.

The winner of the contest between Elyria Catholic and Smithville will play the winner of Saturday's regional final between Liberty-Benton and Western Reserve in next week's Division III state semifinals in Columbus.

According to a report on the Cleveland Plain Dealer Website, Regina was found in violation of a bylaw in section 8, which covers students from foreign countries, as well as bylaw 3-1-1 for a lack of monitoring the school's compliance with OHSAA bylaws and sports regulations.

After receiving an anonymous mailing Wednesday about concerns with a player's eligibility, along with other potential violations, OHSAA administrators conducted a review and questioned Regina administrators Thursday in a conference call, according to the Plain Dealer.

The OHSAA concluded the player, who they would not name, was in violation of bylaw 4-8-1. Students from countries and provinces outside the United States are ineligible unless they meet one of four exceptions, all of which require approval from the OHSAA commissioner's office.

Regina is scheduled to close its doors after this school year because of financial difficulties.

Also on Thursday, the OHSAA ruled Huber Huber Heights Wayne's boys basketball team had two ineligible players. But because the school was provided false information there are no forfeitures.

Wayne will play Cincinnati St. Xavier on Saturday.
