All-Ohio soccer: Area trio are first-team picks
Three area players that led their teams to outstanding seasons were honored last week by being named first team all-Ohio by the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association.

Ottawa-Glandorf's T.J. Metzger was a first-team selection in the Division II boys picks.

Van Buren's Kayla Sonnenberg and Kalida's Summer Holtkamp were both first teamers in the Division III girls all-Ohio selections.

Metzger, a senior midfielder, led the Titans to a 19-2 overall record that included a share of the Western Buckeye League championship. He scored 14 goals and added seven assists for the Titans, who finished just one win away from a spot in the OHSAA state tournament when they dropped a 2-0 decision to Bay Village Bay in the regional final.

Sonnenberg, a senior midfielder, scored 19 goals with four assists to lead Van Buren to a 14-5 record, the NCOSA championship and a spot in the district finals for the first time in school history.

Holtkamp, a senior forward, also played a role in a historic season for Kalida. She was the team's top offensive player as she led the Wildcats to a Putnam County League title, unbeaten regular season and a regional tournament berth for the first time in school history.

Liberty-Benton's Kayla Trevino, Kalida's Kaylyn Verhoff, Continental's Leva Weller and Fort Jennings' Macy Schroeder all earned second team all-Ohio honors in Division III.

Area boys players were also well represented in Division III.

Kalida's Zach Erhart, Liberty-Benton's Zach Garver and Bluffton's Stephen Tartakov all earned spots on the Division III boys all-Ohio second team.
