Girls basketball: New Riegel rolls past Lakota in MAL opener
KANSAS -- New Riegel blitzed Lakota 28-2 in the middle two quarters to seal a 50-18 Midland Athletic League girls basketball win over the Raiders on Thursday.

The Blue Jackets (3-0, 1-0 MAL) held the Raiders (0-3, 0-1) to just nine points in the final three quarters, after finishing the first quarter with a 15-9 lead.

New Riegel nearly forced as many turnovers (27) as Lakota had in field goal attempts (28).

Taylor Kirian scored eight of her game-high 15 points in the first quarter to lead the Blue Jackets.

Kara Scherger (two 3-pointers) and Lauren Ladd (nine rebounds) also chipped in eight points.

CONTINENTAL -- Paige Ordway and Leva Weller combined for 29 points to power Continental to a 62-35 nonconference girls basketball win over Hicksville Thursday night.

Ordway led all scorers with 15 points while Weller had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Pirates improved to 2-0.

McKenzie Gonwick scored 14 points for the Aces (0-4).

MCGUFFEY -- Riverdale fell behind early and could never get it all back as Hardin County rival Upper Scioto Valley defeated the Falcons 45-36 Thursday in nonconference girls basketball action.

Maura Greisheimer (12 points), Ali Goldsmith (12) and Aspen Rose (10) each reached double figures for the Rams (1-1).

Tiffany Wright led Riverdale (1-1) with 12 points.

The Falcons trailed 13-4 after one quarter but got within 23-17 by halftime.

ELIDA -- Sabrina Cline led four Elida players in double figures as the Bulldogs stopped Columbus Grove 58-54 in overtime in a nonconference girls basketball game Thursday night.

Columbus Grove (1-2) rallied from a 5-point halftime deficit by outscoring Elida 27-22 in the second half. But the Bulldogs took care of Columbus Grove 12-8 in the extra session to improve to 2-1.

O'Sha Owens netted 12 points, Tori McAdams tossed in 11 sand Kylie Downton scored 10 for Elida.

Columbus Grove's Sammi Stechschulte netted 17 points to lead all scorers. Sydney McCluer scored 10 points and Renee Karhoff grabbed 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

ST. MARYS -- Kalida pick up its first girls basketball win of the season, in a narrow 49-44 fashion over St. Marys Memorial on Thursday in nonconference play.

Kylie Osterhage (11 points) and Elizabeth Turnwald (10 points) each reached double figures for the Wildcats, which converted 18 of 42 field goal attempts.

Kalida held a 27-25 edge at halftime and managed to secure its five-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats held a 24-17 rebounding edge, including an 8-3 margin on the offensive side.

MILLER CITY -- Leading by just one point at halftime, Ayersville went on a second-half tear, outscoring Miller City 32-11 after the break to post a 54-32 win over the Wildcats on Thursday in nonconference girls basketball.

Molly Hammersmith finished with 17 points, Megan Schubert added 12 points and Nicki Schroeder was 3 for 3 from behind the 3-point line for nine points for Ayersville (2-1).

Melissa Michel scored a game-high 19 points and claimed 13 rebounds for Miller City (0-3), which had just three players break into the scoring column. Haley Lammers added 11 points for the Wildcats.

Ayersville hit 23 of 51 attempts from the field for a respectable 45 percent clip.

Miller City connected on 11 of 32 attempts (34 percent), including going 0 for 9 from 3-point range. The Wildcats also committed 26 turnovers to just 14 for Ayersville.
