Prep boys golf: Hopewell-Loudon's Gorrell advances to district
GALION -- Hopewell-Loudon's Bryce Gorrell carded an 80 on Monday and three of his teamnmates were in the upper 80s, but the Chieftains fell seven strokes shy of advancing from the Division III boys sectional golf tournament held at Galion's Valley View Golf Course.

Christian Madsen fired an 87 and Jarid Gelinas and Aric Creeger both had 88s for Hopewell-Loudon's 343 team total. Only three teams qualified for Thursday's Division III district at Bowling Green's Stone Ridge Golf Club, however, and Ashland Crestview (308), Wynford (334) and Norwalk St. Paul (336) advanced.

Gorrell did land one of the four district qualifying spots awarded to individual golfers from non-advancing schools. Also advancing were Tiffin Calvert's Jeremy Hanna (78), New London's Cory Haswell (80) and Seneca East's Nathan Phillips (78).

Riverdale, led by Zach Bowman's 94, placed 12th in the 13-team sectional.

The tournament started last Thursday, but was halted and rescheduled because of bad weather. Before rain stopped play, Crestview's Ben Olewiler birdied the 310-yard first hole and scored a hole-in-one on the 125-yard second. His 3-under start was erased when the sectional was restarted; Olewiler shot a 39-38--77 Monday.
