Local Sports from The CourierMonday, October 15, 2012TRAC cross country: Findlay boys place secondStaff Writer ARLINGTON -- Three top 10 finishers from his boys team left Findlay High cross country coach Mark Gleason feeling pretty good about his team at Saturday's Three Rivers Athletic Conference championships at Sycamore Springs Golf Course. But watching his standout senior and No. 1 runner Matt Waaland getting medical attention after the race had to be unsettling. Waaland led the entire event until the final 300 meters. But he dropped back to fifth and then collapsed at the finish line as the Trojans finished in second place in the boys standings behind Toledo St. Francis for the second straight year. "I think he just got too excited and went out too fast," Gleason said of Waaland. "It's his senior year. Running in a home meet he had a lot of energy and I think he let it get the best of him." Waaland, who was the favorite, posted a lightning-fast time of 4:37 at the mile mark and was sitting first by 40 or 50 meters at the 2-mile mark of the 5,000-meter race with a time of 9:35. He continued to lead before tying up with about 300 meters to go and struggling to get to the finish line, finishing fifth in 15:39.21. After receiving medical attention, Waaland was taken to Blanchard Valley Hospital as a precautionary measure. He was treated and released later in the day. Toledo St. Francis' Kyle Lach won the race for the second straight season as he toured the course in 15:27.7. His performance helped the Knights to a 34-75 winning margin over the Trojans. Findlay junior Shadd Risser repeated his first team all-TRAC honors by placing sixth in 15:40.0. It was the first time Risser cracked the 16-minute mark in his career. "I'd like to say it was all me but it was some of the course, too. It was fast for everyone," Risser said. "I loved the way I ran today. This is a very tough league and we're competing against a lot of Saints, recruited kids. We're running against great runners and great coaches." Talented FHS freshman Isaiah Gaines also put together a solid race finishing 10th in 16:02.4 to earn all-TRAC second team. Toledo Notre Dame edged Oregon Clay 47-49 in a tight battle for the girls title. The Trojans ended up sixth with 132 points. A pair of Findlay girls earned all-league honors. Sara Barwig grabbed the final spot on the all-TRAC second team by finishing 14th in a season-best 19:42.9. Emily Stahl made the all-TRAC honorable mention list with a 15th place effort (19:49.55). Oregon Clay's Erin Gyuerke was the individual champion in 18:08.68. Lach was the TRAC Boys Runner of the Year while Gyuerke won the same honor for the girls.
