MAL cross country: Hopewell-Loudon girls win title

FREMONT -- Hopewell-Loudon's girls team had enough depth to defend its team title Saturday at the Midland Athletic League cross country championships at Fremont's Walsh Park.

The Chieftains, led by first-team all-MAL runners Erin Reinhart-Anez (5th, 21:03.18) and Shelby Raudebaugh (8th, 21:13.1), knocked off Fostoria St. Wendelin 71-81 for first. Carey was third with 91 points.

Lakota's Cariss Reese was the girls individual champion with a time of 20:16.02.

St. Wendelin's Jocelyn Reinhart (4th, 20:54.98) and Victoria Volpe (7th, 21:07.63) and Carey's Jaclyn Troiano (6th, 21:04.77) earned spots on the MAL first team.

St. Wendelin's Sara (10th, 21:19.99) and Karin Goddard (15th, 21:47.43) were second team along with Hopewell-Loudon's Kailey Coleman (12th, 21:23.29) and Carey's Alivia Stephan (13th, 21:25.27).

Seneca East was near perfect in defending its MAL boys title as the Tigers had six top 10 finishes and scored 18 points. Hopewell-Loudon topped Carey 73-93 for second place.

Seneca East's Wes Pipher was the individual boys champ in 16:24.67. Hopewell-Loudon's Chet Swartzmiller (7th, 17:22.62) and St. Wendelin's Jorden Nye (8th, 17:24.04) also made the first team.

Carey's Ben Kromer (11th, 17:36.75) and Brayden Leist (14th, 17:52.68) and Hopewell-Loudon's Robert Kniss (13th, 17:44.57) and Patric Gase (16th, 17:53.1) earned spots on the second team.

Hopewell-Loudon's Paul Jones was voted the MAL Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year. Seneca East's Doug Mason was selected as the boys coach of the year,
