Boys Basketball: Big TRAC games tonight
They won't award the trophy for winning the 2012-13 Three Rivers Athletic Conference boys basketball championship until the season is over.

But what happens today will have a huge effect on who will be reaching for that trophy a month from now.

The four teams battling for the TRAC lead -- Toledo Whitmer, Toledo St. John's, Findlay and Toledo Central Catholic -- will go head-to-head today in a pivotal matchup of league leaders.

St. John's (11-3, 6-1) is at Whitmer (11-2. 6-1) in a marquee matchup of state-ranked teams. Findlay (8-4, 5-1) is at Central Catholic (8-2, 4-2) as the Trojans and Fighting Irish look to keep pace.

Central Catholic's basketball season was delayed because the Fighting Irish were busy winning the Division II state football championship. Central Catholic did get off to a 7-0 start and was ranked as high as second in the Division I state poll, but the Irish have lost two of their last three games, both of them TRAC contests to Whitmer (39-30) and St. John's (68-56).

Findlay has won seven of nine since starting the season 1-2. The Trojans are 2-2 in their last four games, but the setbacks were nonleague losses to Defiance (40-31) and Ottawa-Glandorf (53-43).

Overall balance has been an asset for both Findlay and Central Catholic.

Austin Gutting is averaging 15 points a game, Adam Twining 11.8, Joseph Davidson 10.3 and Michael Clark 9.2 for Findlay. Twining was injured late in Findlay's 51-50 win over Lima Senior when he dove trying to break up a fastbreak lay-up. The status of the 6-foot-3 junior, who missed Findlay's first two games due to injury, is uncertain.

Central Catholic has also shown good balance, with Keith Towbridge averaging 12.6 points a game, Deontae Cole 10.6, Nate Harris 9.1 and Cliff Bussey 8.9.

Findlay's girls basketball team will be at Toledo Whitmer on Thursday as the Trojans (12-3, 7-1 TRAC) look to keep pace with Toledo Notre Dame (11-3, 8-0) in the standings.
