Local Sports from The CourierWednesday, January 30, 2013Findlay High to honor 1948 state championship teamBob Moore and Joe DaPore, members of Findlay High's 1947-48 basketball team, are expected to be on hand Saturday when the FHS Alumni Association recognizes the squad that won Ohio's Class A state championship. With several veterans returning from a team that went 21-3 and reached the state semifinals in 1947, the 14th of Carl Bachman's 21 Findlay High teams was on everyone's preseason radar when the 1947-48 season began. The Trojans did not disappoint, going 27-0 and winning by an average margin of 55-27. Findlay entered tournament play with a 19-0 record, and prep basketball aficionados from across the state were already predicting a state final showdown between the Trojans and Paul Walker's Middletown team, a perennial power that, in the previous four years, had won three state titles and been runner-up the other time. Middletown was upended by Miamisburg in the district final, but Findlay never faltered, beating Mansfield Madison (47-37) and Toledo Central Catholic (60-28) in regional play, Canton South (41-35) in the state semifinals, and finally Hamilton Catholic 51-36 for the state championship. Moore headlined an all-senior starting five that included Dick Barrett, Jack Dunlap, Joe Fassett and Al Steegman. Rounding out the roster were DaPore, Joe Fekete, Bob File, Les Gaines, Bill Garnes, Tom Huffman, David Koehler, Dick Miller, Ed Rate, Fred Wilch, Bob Wise and Bill Wisner. Assisting Bachman was Richard Lowry. Findlay will face Cleveland East Tech in a rare Saturday afternoon matchup. The junior varsity teams take the floor at 1 p.m. and the varsity contest is expected to begin around 2:30 p.m. Relatives of players from the 1947-48 team who are deceased or unable to attend are asked to contact Roger Powell at the FHS Alumni Office at 419-420-7007.
